You Know What Good Math Teaching Looks Like. The Hard Part Is Doing It for 28 Kids at Once.
Every math coach and administrator I talk to says some version of the same thing: “My teachers know the research. They’ve read the NCTM practices. They believe in productive struggle and conceptual understanding.
But between the pacing guide, the intervention groups, and the kid who’s three grade levels behind sitting next to the kid who’s ready to be extended — something has to give.”
That gap between knowing good instruction and delivering it every single period is where most well-intentioned math initiatives quietly stall out.
NCTM’s eight Effective Mathematics Teaching Practices aren’t new. Most educators can probably list a few from memory: establish clear goals, pose purposeful questions, build procedural fluency from conceptual understanding, elicit evidence of student thinking. They’re good. They’re research-backed, and also genuinely hard to operationalize when you’re one teacher managing a room full of students who are all in different places.
That’s the real leadership question: not “do our teachers know what good math instruction looks like,” but “do they have the structure, time, and data to actually do it, every day, for every student?”
A few things that tend to separate schools where these practices actually take hold, from schools where they stay a poster on the wall:
→ Teachers aren’t guessing where each student’s gaps are — they have a clear, standards-aligned picture of what to teach next.
→ Instruction moves beyond “right or wrong” and starts capturing how a student is actually thinking.
→ Discourse — the explaining, comparing, and justifying that builds real understanding — has a structure, not just good intentions.
→ Data leads to action fast enough to matter, instead of surfacing three weeks after the unit is over.
None of this replaces great teaching. It supports it. That’s the distinction worth sitting with: personalized learning tools should give teachers back the time and information to teach the way they already know they should.
